Gluten Free Red Wine Chocolate Cake

Everyone who knows me knows about my love for red wine. Give me a glass of Malbec a good book and some tunes, and I’m in my happy place. While watching Food Network, I saw a recipe for a Red Wine Chocolate Cake and thought to myself I can’t think of a better way to add to my love of all things Red Wine than by making a Gluten Free Red Wine Chocolate Cake. 

Between my love for Chocolate and Red Wine, making a Gluten Free Red Wine Chocolate Cake seemed like the best way to merge the two.

How to make a Gluten Free Red Wine Chocolate Cake?

You need Red Wine of course! But choosing the right wine is key. You definitely want a dry red wine. Using a sweet one will change not only the sweetness of the cake, but also the flavour. I tried it and it wasn’t my favorite. So for me a Merlot, Malbec or Pinot Noir was the choice in this recipe. 

Once you’ve chosen you’re wine, the rest of the ingredients are what you’d normally find in a chocolate cake:

      • Cocoa Powder
      • Sugar: We used brown sugar in this recipe. It gave our cake a real depth of flavor and delicious texture. 
      • Eggs
      • Butter
      • GF 1:1 Baking Flour, such as Bob’s Red Mill.
      • Butter or Dairy Free Alternate.
      • Baking Soda: This cake uses only baking soda as it’s rising agent and it surprised me at first, but the cake came out so amazing and delicate. 

Can’t Have Wine?

When it comes to baking with alcohol, once it hits the heat of the oven the alcohol is evaporated and what you are left with is the flavor of the wine. But if you can’t have wine or not sure about the flavour we substituted the wine for milk and a dairy free substitute and the cake came out just as amazing. 

Frosting

No cake would be complete without frosting and our Easy Perfect Buttercream Recipe paired so well who this.

Red Wine Chocolate Cake (Gluten Free + Dairy Free)
Yield: 1 (8x8) Square Cake

Red Wine Chocolate Cake (Gluten Free + Dairy Free)

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 1 cup GF 1:1 Baking flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder, heaped
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a square 8x8 cake pan with parchment and set aside.
  2. In a bowl whisk together, GF flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, cream together butter and suagr until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time mixing in between additions.
  4. Beat in the vanilla, then gradually add the flour mixture alternately with the red wine until well combined but not over mixed.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, and bake for abut 30 - 35 minutes until done and a toothpick stuck through the center comes out clean.
  6. Add your favourite frosting, liek our Easy Perfect Buttercream, then serve and enjoy!
