One of my favorite cuisines is Asian; next to Italian of course. I think it stems from my Chinese heritage. Although we have a lot of recipes in my family, I like to try new ones and these Sweet and Spicy Siracha Meatballs is one of those that I found on Pinterest and decided to try my own version.

What you need for these Gluten Free Sweet and Spicy Siracha Meatballs

  • Siracha of course! Siracha is a Thai chilli sauce that is used as a dipping sauce. I love Siracha, because I love spice. While trying some sushi stacks recently, I ended up with a big bottle. Not sure of what to do with the rest, I looked up recipes and using them for meatballs was a popular idea I saw pop up.
  • Ground Turkey I wanted a lighter meatball, so I used ground turkey, but ground beef or chicken can work as well.

Cooking your Sweet and Spicy Siracha Meatballs

I recently got an air fryer, so I have been cooking everything in it. So much so that my family tells me they think it needs a break! Although I cooked the meatballs in the air fryer, they can be done in the oven as well.

Serving these Gluten Free Sweet and Spicy Siracha Meatballs

I like to serve these over some rice noodles with a side of steamed veggies to have an asian spaghetti and meatballs. But you can serve these over a salad, white rice or with a side of veggies alone.

If you’re ready to give your meatballs a spicy kick, I hope you give the recipe a try. If not try our easy gluten free baked meatballs for a simple recipe that is still full of flavour.

Ingredients

For The Meatballs:

  • 1 lb. lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup gluten free bread crumbs
  • 1 eggs
  • 1/4 cup chives or green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • pinch of ginger powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For The Sweet & Spicy Sauce:

  • 2-3 tablespoons Sriracha, depends on how spicy you like it
  • 3 tbsps gluten free soy sauce
  • 2 tbsps rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup agave
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil

Extras

  • Rice noodles
  • Broccoli
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking tray with parchment or cooking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, green onions, garlic powder, ginger powder salt and pepper until well combined.
  3. Shape mixture into 16 balls and place on prepared baking sheets about 1-2 inches apart.
  4. Bake meatballs for 20 to 25 minutes, or until brown and cooked through.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, in small sauce pan combine all the ingredients for the sauce.
  6. Bring to a bubble over medium heat, whisking occasionally to prevent sticking. Once it has reached a bubble, reduce heat to low and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  7. Remove cooked meatballs from the oven, add to a heat safe bowl. Add half the sauce mixture, then toss with the meatballs adding more sauce as needed until the meatballs are well coated.
  8. Serve immediately over rice noodles, with steamed veggies and top with green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds then enjoy!

Notes

Have an air fryer?

  • Try baking these in the air fryer for a quciker version.
  • To cook, preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 3 minutes. Add the meatballs in one layer. (you may have to cook in 2 batches depending on the size of your air fryer.)
  • Cook for 4-5 minutes, then flip and cook for another 4-5 mintues until brown and cooked through. Then toss in the sauce before serving.

No Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs?

  • If you don't have gluten-free breadcrumbs you can use tapioca starch instead along with 2 tablespoons of almond flour.

Spicy

  • If you like your sauce spicy you can use the max amount of 3 tablespoons, but if you prefer a milder version reduce the siracha to 1-2 tablespoons tasting the sauce to get the desired amount of heat.
